When teaching reading with the Lenormand cards, I often hear students express apprehension about using the playing card insets.

I make an effort to instantly demystify the idea that one has to know everything about Etteilla or French cartomancy in order to make head or tails of it. Here’s a simple rule I apply.

For me, in the context of reading a grand tableau with the Lenormand cards in a snap, something like 2 minutes, thinking about the primary function of the suits helps. I hate dragging something that is not nearly as complicated as some make it out to be.

So, for a snappy and precise reading here’s what I do. I read first the grand tableau as I always do. Formulate a master sentence that gives me my answer, and then proceed to see how ALL the cards in the tableau support it.

The reason why I…

In the various online groups where people learn how to read the Lenormand cards there seems to be some controversy about how to read a two-card line. And is a two-card line suitable for yes/no questions?

There also seems to be some disagreement as to the extent to which one should disregard the images on the Lenormand cards, insofar as these may interfere with the otherwise straightforward answer that one expects from a two-card line.

The argument here is that it is better to just stick to a method and use the keywords that each individual card is provided with by the said method, rather than consider the card’s iconography or symbolic pattern. Some readers are actually quite keen to distance themselves from reading the image as this activity smells too much of tarot.

To counter this limited view, I have offered a few suggestions in various places, which I’ll briefly…

A Healing Message – 3 of swords

Legacy of the Divine Tarot by Circo Marchetti

When one sees the three of swords come up in a reading, their first reaction is usually, “yikes,” or “yep, I knew that already.” This card is not to be taken lightly. Of course you knew that already!

Look at the image in this card. This sort of pain doesn’t just happen over night.

It is usually a good indication that one has been hurting for quite a while, and that they are probably in denial.

Even if it’s not what one wants to hear, they need to. You are actually doing them a favor by helping them prepare for what they already know is inevitable. Just keep your heart in hand, because your compassion as a reader will make all the difference in the world to them.

  • Legacy of the Divine Tarot, By Ciro Marchetti is a fascinating deck. It’s image in the three of swords is of a woman who is already very aware that she is hurting. She’s already gone through the majority of the grieving process, and for her, this card in the deck is sort of a card that says, “I understand. I see what you are going through. You will be ok. You’re not alone.” The good news is, after all the tears and all the pain, comes acceptance. This card is showing your client that it wasn’t all in their head, what they feel is very real, and a normal part of life.

If you turn the three of swords upside down for a moment, you will begin to almost “feel” the heart starting to heal.

The swords are heavy, and so is the grief. Soon gravity is going to release these swords from the heart, and from that moment on it can begin to recover.

It will not be easy, but if you accept that the pain is real, and that it’s going to take time to heal, you will be that much closer to feeling whole again. You have survived your own personal tragedy. No matter how big or small it is to someone else, it is your victory. See how strong you are? :D

I usually do a follow up with my client to make sure that they are doing fairly well. I don’t know about you, but I do what I do because I believe in the power of light, and love.
I take others feelings very seriously. I like to help point them to the light at the end of the tunnel. I know all too well the agonies of life.

Remember what I said before; the power of a smile is awesome! If you don’t believe me, walk into a room and smile at someone. I bet they smile back! Smiles are contagious and they somehow lift the heaviness from ones heart. Even if one can not see your face, they can hear your smile in your voice!

Clubs, I mean …..

Tarot Quick Fact: Early card decks from Spain featured four suites: coins, cups, swords, and polo sticks. Bet you’re giggling about the polo stick huh? I did too.

When these cards turned up in Europe around 1375, Europeans, who enjoyed a good card game never heard of a polo stick. Therefore they used “wands.”

Many Tarot decks reserve these suit names. With a modern deck of regular playing cards, these suits are as follows: diamonds, hearts, spades and clubs.

Can you imagine how drunk one would get at a card game if every time someone slipped up and said clubs instead of polo sticks? Would be an interesting way to liven things up now wouldn’t it? :-)

Experiment: Does one of the trump cards in your tarot deck represent qualities you admire, but you do not see in yourself? For me it’s the self control of the “strength” card.

Make this quality that you do not see in yourself, your weekly goal. I encourage you to take that card from your deck and put it somewhere you can see it, for at least a week or so. Write down in your journal at the end of each day what you may have done to practice that skill, and by the end of the week you might surprise yourself at just how much closer to your goal you are.

Grey’s Anatomy Tarot Reflections

(Fenestra Tarot Deck – by Chatriya – Oct 31, 2006)

One of my daily routines is to turn on netflix and watch Grey’s Anatomy while sipping my coffee. Today I was watching Season 7, Episode 2 and the scene was where a flag football team came into the ER with wounds after being struck by lightning. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to write a short article about it.

Each of the boys from the football team had a huge crush on the only girl on the team. Lucky her right?

After being struck by lightning each boy felt compelled to tell her about their love for her and asked her to marry them.

So here’s this poor girl, sitting in a hospital bed crying her eyes out because the one guy that she actually liked in return was injured so much that he needed surgery, and she was unable to tell him she cared for him. So here she is, blubbering, and there are two boys in the room apologizing for making her cry. They were asking her what they did, and how they could make her feel better.

Holy emotions people !! No wonder why I love this show. It’s full of crazy drama, and I am a woman. 🙂

Anyhow, Lexi Grey, one of the surgical residents spoke up and said, “The poor girl was struck by lightning today! She’s crying because everything changed now. She was just part of the team and everyone was friends, now all the sudden, lightning strikes and her whole world changed as she knew it.” (Well not the exact words, but similar)

What a perfect scene to go along with the spread above. We have the six of cups, representing the team mates as friends. Everything seemed perfect, and everyone was having a good time playing football together. The girl on the team was just one of the “guys.” Then suddenly lightning strikes and everything changes; the tower card. Because of the tower, this girl is now crying in a bed, wishing for everything to go back the way it was before.

In conclusion, Tarot can be read quite easily if one can link time and events to the cards while studying them. Now each time I do a reading, and I see these cards, my memory will be jogged, and I will be able to find meaning in the cards more quickly than if I hadn’t associated these cards with the Grey’s Anatomy scene above. 🙂

19 May 1536 – A Prophecy Comes True

(commissioned deck, by Philip Harris)

Today, 19 May 1536, an innocent Queen was put to death by a French swordsman, under the order of King Henry VIII. It was said through a prophecy that this would happen, and Anne lived many days in worry after she lost the love of her husband. She was said to have had sex with multiple men, including her own brother; George Boleyn. These accusations were false and there has been no proof of such, even now. Many are moved by this young woman’s short life, and mourn for her on this very day. A sadness has been coming upon my heart all month. I just wanted to pay tribute to this strong, plain, and beautiful woman whose inspiration has touched the lives of many, even after her time. Here we are, five hundred years later, and our spirits still feel her presence. She was intelligent, strong, and way beyond her time in many ways. Let us not forget her on this day, and remember her greatest love; her daughter, Queen Elizabeth I, who became a successful Queen for England and ruled for many years. She not only was the daughter of Anne, and Queen of England, but she was a female who ruled with the heart of a lion. Rest in peace Anne B. You were undeserving of your fate. In my Tarot deck, you represent the Queen of cups. My emotions run like water at the sound of your name. xo Bridgett

8 of swords – Free Me !!

8 of Swords scan Touchstone Tarot

Sometimes one can be in the perfect mood, and once they leave the house, someone else who is in a bad mood rubs off on them, and steals their joy! There is nothing more annoying to me. We all know the saying, “Misery loves company.” How true.

The other day I went to the grocery store, and the kids were all excited to pick out snacks for their cupboard. We were being silly and dancing in the isles, having a good time. Nothing could steal my joy, absolutely nothing. Or so I thought! After all, I was in the cookie isle.

Upon reaching the cash register, I began unloading my cart and within a few seconds my joy dissipated rather quickly. The cashier was in a funky mood, and decided to take it out on me, the customer.

Back when I was younger I would have told her to stick it where the sun don’t shine and walked out. But, now that I am older, and a responsible mother, I felt like the eight of swords. I was unsure of what to do, and even waiting for the rescue of a manager near by. Which didn’t happen, by the way. I was feeling persecuted, and wasn’t sure which way I should handle the situation.

When you sense or feel a negative mood emanating from someone, try this useful technique to try and understand what it is that’s going on with them. –

First, get yourself out of your own way! Discard the thoughts that you are feeling. Relax, close your eyes, and don’t forget to breath, or you will fall over.

Try to imagine that you are stepping into their shoes, and becoming that person. Feel what they’re feeling. The chances are that you will probably have a better understanding of what is going on, and might even be able to help.

After doing the above technique, I regained my joy, and a smile was back on my face. Apparently I have a beautiful smile because the cashier was no long in a fowl mood. My energies rubbed off on her. See, sometimes a smile really can make a difference.

Back to the 8 of swords. Release yourself from the bondage of misery around you. You have a choice of swords waiting to cut you free. Grab one and cut, what are you waiting for? Whomever tied you up didn’t do such a great job. Take off that blind fold, and see through your feelings. There is a happy ending if you allow yourself one.

Lenormand de Marseilles is here at last

Art and Workings by Edmund Zebrowski

The history of the deck: (If you know this feel free to skip this and go to the edition info.)

In tarot the traditional style deck is the Marseilles tarot in Lenormand the most go to deck that most Traditional Readers would say to reach for is the famous Blue Owl. It is these two icons of the divination world are that I hope to have brought together. Combining these two was a process unlike anything I had done before. The Blue Owl is a deck that has a life all it’s own in a reading. From ways the clouds blow to the direction of faces the deck is what is used in many of the traditional English courses out there today.  It is that tradition that I wanted this deck made in, so following the Blue Own was my guide.  If in the the Rider card of the Blue…
